Our "1st annual" Block Party
After knowing that I should do it for years, and always procrastinating until it was too late (and then feeling bad for having not followed that still small voice), I finally decided I was going to have a block party on Memorial Day, no matter what. Of course, I started too late to get a permit to block off the street, so we had it in our front yard and driveway, because I wasn't going to let anything convince me to put it off again. (Well, almost anything. I am rational, or so I like to pretend...)
It was great! Everyone said that they had also been thinking about it for a long time, and they were glad that I'd actually done it. The "rules" were pretty simple: Bring something to grill, and something to share. We provided plates, plasticware, two grills, and drinks. Rita made lemonade with lemons from our Meyer lemon tree, and--since we'd discovered sweet tea (that's one word, with the emphasis on the front: SWEETtea) on our trip to Nashville--she made that too. Everyone loved it. HOWEVER!!! If you follow the link to the recipe, I should tell you that she only used 1 cup of sugar, and it was still plenty sweet. I can't even imagine 2 cups!
We had so much food! And it was all yummo. After we ate, we played Apples to Apples, which is a really cool group game. Of course, if you know us, you know that we didn't always give a straight answer, and the cool thing was that the other people that were playing were right along with us in craziness.
Next year, I'm going to start early enough to get the permit, and expand it a bit to add people around our cul-de-sac. I think it will be cool, 'cuz--after all--this year's was cool!
