Our coffee maker died! What ever shall we do? It is all Starbucks' fault! (Wouldn't I make a good liberal?). That, and whoever stole our Peet's coffee. I blame society!

Why, you may ask, is it Starbucks' fault? Well, after we lost our Peet's, we were desperate. We were devastated. We weren't thinking clearly. So we got Starbucks' "bold" coffee. Bleech. (If that's bold, Peet's must be off the scale!) It was like brown water. So we have been upping the coffee to water ratio, which worked...until that fateful morning when we went to make a full pot (usually we just make enough for each of our commuter cups). When the coffee maker started making strange noises and brown mud began seeping out of places, we knew we were in trouble.

During the full disassembly and cleanout that followed, we accidentally got water in the electronics (yes, it was unplugged! Kids, don't try this at home!). The LCD display stopped working. Well, it's just water, it should dry out and start working again. And it did. Sort of. The LCD came back, and I put it all back together, and life was good. For about 5 seconds. Then it decided, like HAL, that it didn't want to turn off, no matter which position the switch is in. So now, our coffee pot is part of the "always on infrastructure". Except that we unplugged it, so it is more like "always off"...

Sigh. (Of course, since we drink decaf anyway, you're probably thinking, "so what"? You're so cruel!)

Afterward: We made coffee press coffee with the Starbucks' coffee, and it wasn't too bad, so maybe it was just ground wrong for our coffee maker. Yes, we are evil demon-spawn bourgeoisie: we don't grind our own coffee, we let others do it. Actually, we're just lazy...
Aaargh! You never think that it will happen to you...

Someone stole all of our mail one day last week. Yes, including the Peet's delivery. And the PennySaver, and all the rest of the junk mail. Everything. I mean, how sad is that? Our neighbor across the street also had his mail stolen, and another neighbor had all the riffled envelopes from another neighborhood stuffed into his mailbox. So we spent the day putting credit locks on everything, checking to see what might have come, and generally worrying. Fortunately, some important bills and reasonably-sized checks either had already come, or the people sending the checks hadn't sent them yet (I guess in this case it is good that some organizations aren't in any great rush to give you your money back...) So we're hoping we're ok, but only time will tell us so, and fraud may grow, for all we know.
