"You've both just finished a tough semester at West Valley, your spouse's startup may be toast, what are you going to do next?"

We're going to Disneyland!

And so we did. It was a real blast! Especially the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters thing. (Blast, ha, ha:-))

Where Mister Lincoln once held forth, there is now a piece on the history of Disneyland. It was pretty cool, but much cooler was the guy in the museum part before the movie. He was a veritable fount of information on all things Disneyland. His badge indicated that he'd been there since 1970. I guess there are worse things than spending your entire career in "The happiest place on earth!"

Disney's California adventure was fun, if a bit surreal. It is like they took California, airbrushed it, polished it up, and shrunk it into what used to be the parking lot of Disneyland. (Kind of the reverse of "they paved paradise and put up a parking lot"...) It was cool, but weird, because we'd go to some part of the park, and there'd be the shock of "I recognize this" followed by the realization that it was just a veneer. The real thing is so much richer, deeper, more rewarding. California is such a great place! If it weren't for all those liberals...Sigh.

I really enjoyed the plays on words in the names of shops: for example, "Phil M Noir" (or something like that), that type of thing. hollywood backdropWhen we were there, the weather was "June gloom", which I guess is a somewhat common weather condition where it is a bit overcast, cool, and gloomy the first part of June. So it was pretty funny to see the backdrop to "Hollywood" with a nice sunny blue sky. But it was nice, because it wasn't really hot, although when the sun did come out, it was a bit uncomfortable standing in a line waiting for a ride. But we didn't have to do that very much, either: That's the nice part of going in the middle of the week before most schools are really out.

Did we do the "Tower of Terror"? Umm, no. Not a chance. "Grizzly River Run"? Nope, too cold to be that wet! "Soarin' over California" was really wonderful, although certain people,--who shall remain nameless--freaked out a bit because it really feels like you are flying high up over California. But I thought it was pretty darn cool, and the pictures were extremely well detailed and seamless. And the smells were kinda cool. Which reminds me: California aromas that didn't make the cut:
  1. Coalinga (Your nose knows when you pass this point on the Interstate 5 freeway")
  2. Remote Northern California ("What's that smell?" )
  3. Chico State (Do alcohol fumes rise?)
  4. The LA basin on a bad day ("I don't trust air I can't see")
Well, like I said, they cleaned everything up... Still, couldn't they have had a wine smell over Napa?

Anyway, we're back now, and trying to recover from 3 pretty non-stop days--4 if you count our tour of Hearst Castle, 5 if you count our trip back up. Also trying to recover from falling off the WW wagon. Sigh. Yes, it's true. I'm no longer at my goal weight. Time to get serious again, before things get tight!
