Okay, this is Rita, and I'm gonna try to do this Blog thing. I'm in school, and that's been rather interesting. You see, when I got laid off in 2002, it got to be early summer, and I realized that I needed to put together a contingency plan. So, as I've always had an interest in the law, I decided that I'd take classes to be a paralegal. So, in the fall, I took Intro to Paralegalism, and Intro to Law. It was pretty neat! Now, I'm taking Contract Law and Intro to Legal Analysis. Of course, I got a job in August just before the semester started, so now I go to school and work at the same time...well, not really at the same time, but you know what I mean.
So why be a paralegal and not a lawyer? Well, because I always start out slowly. I was going to get a 2-yr programming degree, and wound up getting an MS in Computer Science (almost). I figure if I like the law, maybe I will go to law school and become a lawyer. I'm not really sure what area of the law I'm interested in. There's a part of me that wants to take advantage of my CS background and go into IP, Patents, and Copyrights, but that's fairly concentrated here in the Bay Area. I mean, you can go other places to practice it, but not everywhere. It is, however, the highest moneymaking part of paralegalism.
There's a part of me that wants to capitalize on the Baby Boomer Generation and get into Estate Planning - wills, trusts, and the like. After all, everyone's gonna be there... I think a big plus for this is that I can get a job in this part of the law anywhere in the country. So, if we decided to relocate from Silicon Valley, I could get a job easily.
I guess I could go into corporate law - that would probably be okay, too. I'm sure I could practice that anywhere. I guess it'll depend on how I like this Contracts class.
