I was born and raised in a little town west of Cape Cod, Massachusetts called Westport. There are two local newspapers, one from New Bedford called The New Bedford Standard Times, and one from Fall River, called The Herald News.  I got an associates' degree in mathematics at Bristol Community College in Fall River, Massachusetts, and went on to get a bachelors' degree in Computer Science and Theoretical Mathematics (double major) at Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU), which is now known as the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.  During my Masters' Studies, I drove across the country to become an intern in the Human Factors group at IBM's Santa Teresa Laboratory (now Silicon Valley Lab) in San Jose in 1990, and I have never left California.  I now call the Bay Area my home.

Penzey's Spices

I love to cook – I am a fan of Food Network. I enjoy making soups, sauces and pastas from scratch. My latest endeavor was to create my own spice rub. Did you know that the most commonly used ingredient in spice rubs is *not* salt?  It's onion powder – salt is number two.

I started making earrings about fifteen years ago when I went to an art and wine festival and saw someone charge $45 for a pair of earrings made from three beads.  I figured it couldn't be that hard, and I've been making jewelry ever since. I've expanded into necklaces and bracelets, and I've had a lot of fun giving them as gifts to my friends.

In the winter months, I knit and crochet. I’ve been crocheting since I was a child, and now I’m getting into knitting.

How to Play Ukulele

I have had a passion for music since I was a child. I got my first guitar at sixteen, and have never looked back. My interests are guitar, piano, percussion, and any other little instruments I find along the way. My most recent addition was a ukulele when we visited Kauai for Doug’s 50th birthday this year. The guy in the store said that once I got used to a ukulele, I’d never want to play my guitar again. He’s almost right…

I have toyed with the idea of becoming a lawyer since I was in high school. I decided to see what a legal profession might look like by getting a Certificate in Paralegal Studies from West Valley College. My interest was in Corporate Law, and I was also interested in Immigration Law. I still may consider going to law school once I retire.

We're also big gamers as a family – we've been using board and card games for years as a way to have family nights together. Here's some of the ones we enjoy playing a lot!
